Music is an extremely important part of the curriculum at Clapham Terrace Primary School. All children have an opportunity to take part in a wide range of musical activities, these include: singing, composing using simple tuned and untuned percussion instruments and performing to others. In addition to in-class music lessons, children share their musical talents in assemblies and special concerts. We regularly invite visiting musicians and parents with musical talents in to provide workshops and live music experiences.

who shared their music and taught us about the skills required to be a musician. They are performing at the Royal

Throughout the year, there are productions and concerts in school. The choir is open to all and our KS2 children have the opportunity to perform at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham as part of the Young Voices choir. We hold an annual music morning in the summer term where children and their parents perform to the school, this is a hugely popular event and allows us to share our love of music with the community.
Instrumental music is a strong feature of the school. All children in Year 4 have the opportunity to learn an instrument (e.g. ukulele) with the Upbeat Programme. As children progress into KS2, they have the opportunity to learn strings, keyboard, saxophone and drums with peripatetic teachers. Peripatetic music is organised by Independent Music Solutions.
Music: Statement of Intent
At Clapham Terrace Primary School, it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music. Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. We also teach technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and encourage children to discuss music using these terms.
