PE and Sport

Subject Leader: Ollie Mason

Link Governor: Jo Lally

At Clapham Terrace our vision is for all of our children to have a good understanding of physical literacy and know:

  • The value of physical activity for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  • The social and moral values of participating in sport.

PE and School Sport are an important part of school life at Clapham Terrace. It helps to promote the importance of physical activity as well as healthy lifestyles and to raise children’s self-esteem. Consequently, PE lessons are carefully timetabled and every class participates in at least two hours of PE each week. Socially and morally, our children have a good understanding of rules, instructions and collaborative learning from their PE lessons. This has supported the high standards that are evident throughout the school.

‘Pupils play and work well together.’ – Ofsted 2021

At Clapham we value pupil voice and believe in educating our children to become young leaders. Since the introduction of the Sport Premium Funding, we have been able to develop the role of our Sports Leaders in school. This has been a great success. Our Sports Leaders now lead house events each half term and support the training of new Sports Leaders each year. Our Sports Leaders are confident in their role and proud of what they do.

We also have Wellbeing Ambassadors who have worked with our School Games organiser in four training sessions throughout the year. They were excellent role models at internal and external competitions, where they led groups and recorded scores. They all joined the end of year virtual celebration where they reflected on their achievements with Ambassadors from lots of other schools.

‘Many pupils carry our roles that give them leadership experiences.’ – Ofsted 2021

We value competition and ensure that every child experiences competitive sport at a level suitable to them. In order to achieve this, we participate in a range of sporting competitions made possible by using the Sports Premium Funding. These include the School Games events, intra-school house competitions, local cricket and tag rugby festivals and inter-school football and netball leagues. These opportunities enable our children to become resilient and collaborative learners.

Physical Education and School Sport: Statement of Intent

At Clapham Terrace, it is our intent to provide every child with an outstanding physical education that will develop competence in physical literacy, decrease sedentary behaviour and increase participation in competitive sport and activity. Our intent is built on the foundation that every child engages in two hours of high-quality PE each week, as well as daily physical activity and regular participation in competition.

Through our broad and balanced curriculum, every child receives two hours of high-quality curriculum PE each week, along with daily activity through initiatives such as Marathon Kids, Maths of the Day and Active 60. Physical activity is embedded within our school ethos and helps our children to become active, persistent, determined, collaborative and resilient learners.

Half termly house events encourage team competition, with an element of personal best challenge and development. Competition is further encouraged through our participation in Marathon Kids, which is enjoyed by all children. Our high quality teaching in PE lessons provides opportunities for all children to develop transferrable life skills as well as their fundamental movement skills. Therefore values such as fairness and respect are developed.

Since 2016, our outstanding provision for PE has been awarded with the School Games Gold Mark and in 2019 we received the National AfPE Quality Mark with Distinction in recognition of our inclusive provision and outstanding PE and School Sport delivery.

We believe in the positive impact that PE and School Sport has for our children and their future. We have seen increases in attendance, as well as increased sporting achievements. We aim to uphold our intent by thoughtful planning, monitoring and regular pupil voice.

The Big Skip Challenge

In June 2021, we completed the the Big Skip Challenge, part of the CSW School Games. There were three individual challenges (single skips, running skips, slalom skips), each of which you did three times, starting with thirty seconds, then sixty seconds, and finally if you really felt up to it you could try doing ninety seconds. Teachers and parents also got involved!

To strengthen the moral, social, cultural and spiritual understanding that sport can offer, we ensure a wide range of activities are offered to suit all. Every class has many opportunities throughout the year, which have included: dance; cricket; tag rugby; yoga; hockey; jiu-jitsu; dodgeball and freestyle football. This has been very well received and children commented in the pupil voice of their love and enjoyment of school sport and PE.

In 2017, we launched a whole school initiative ‘Active 30’, which follows the Youth Sport Trust’s guidance that every child should be active for at least 30 minutes at school and a further 30 at home. Since then, we have been able to monitor the improvements in activity levels throughout the school day and have seen a significant increase. Our children thrive from increasing activity and therefore we have launched Marathon Kids running initiative to continue this journey.

As well as reporting and celebrating sporting achievements in our weekly assemblies, we celebrate significant achievements at the end of each year. To mark outstanding sporting achievement throughout their primary school life, Sports Girl and Boy are awarded to Year 6 children. Furthermore, there is an endeavour award given to a child who has showed fantastic leadership or development.

We have again achieved the School Games Gold Mark for our provision and inclusivity and participation. This award includes reviewing our provision, creating a heat-map to track activity throughout the school day, monitoring participation throughout the school at inter and intra school events, as well as outlining our provision and attendance to extra-curricular clubs. We continue to hold the AfPE Quality Mark.
